Rancho Santana and the surrounding beaches are home to some of the best surf breaks in Nicaragua. Whether you’re an experienced surfer or it’s your first time on a board, our Beach & Surf Club is available to assist you in catching great waves. Rancho Santana offers three surf breaks on site and there are a dozen more breaks in the area. The three surfing beaches on site are Playa Santana, Playa Los Perros, and Playa Rosada.

A local surfer catches a wave at Santana beach.

Playa Santana, our namesake beach, is located right outside The Clubhouse and offers multiple barreling peaks that go left and right. It is best at mid to high tide and is a great break for intermediate to expert surfers. Throughout the day, you can view locals and tourists enjoy the waves at Playa Santana.

Playa Los Perros is a great beach for beginners and where we offer surf lessons. This beach is best for beginners because the wave is slower and smaller than other breaks at the Ranch and offers a forgiving sandy bottom. It’s a great option for those looking to catch their first wave or practice their stand-up routine. Similar to Playa Santana, It is best for surfing at mid to high tide.

Playa Rosada is an advanced left point break only available to guests and owners of Rancho Santana. The sharp reef and long barreling lefts are best surfed at low tide and only recommended for highly experienced surfers. It requires a swell to be able to catch a good wave.

If you are interested in exploring some of the neighboring beaches, there are options for all skill levels. Panga Drops is easily accessible from Playa Los Perros and is a short 5–10 min walk. It offers fun waves for surfers of all levels. Considered one of the best-known breaks in the area, Playa Colorado is accessible by walking from Playa Los Perros, past Panga Drops. The swell is worth the walk and offers heavy barrels, making this break incredibly popular compared to other breaks in the area.

If you are a beginner and would like to surf other breaks, Beginners Bay next to Mag Rock would be a good choice. It’s a short trip north from Playa Santana and its long slow lefts are great for beginners and longboarders.

The Beach & Surf Club at Playa Los Perros arranges trips to Beginners Bay or any breaks in the area. The team is available to make recommendations based on your interests and skill level. They can organize the proper mode of transportation (car or boat) and match guests with a knowledgeable guide.
